  • E-Rate Updates - Notes from Pam Jacobs
    • Several national edtech groups (such as CoSN, SHLB, SECA, SETDA, etc) have asked the FCC to expand the E-Rate Category 2 eligible services list to include advanced cybersecurity as eligible.
    •  It remains unknown whether the FCC will take action to include such products/services for funding year 2022 or not.
    •  It does not appear that more Category 2 money would be available, just that an expanded eligibility for cybersecurity would be allowed.
  • Greg Gunderson - What do schools use for remote desktop support to access staff and student machines remotely.  Greg is looking for something that he can use with remote machine is unattended, and will reconnect after reboot.
    • Chrome Remote Desktop works, but lacks features such as elevating privileges.
    • LogMeIn
    • TightVNC, but there may be some security issues.
    • UltraVNC, PLAEA used an app that would call back to Scott or Jason machines.  Now we use Zoom, partially because of VNC security exploits
    • Windows Remote Desktop, drawback is that you can’t “Join” a desktop for support.
    • Bomgar allows “Pinned” connection that will allow unattended remote access.
  • E-Sports Webinars - ITEC - Bytespeed
    • ITEC, along with Bytespeed and the Iowa High School Esports Association (IAHSEA), are putting on a series of webinars about Esports in schools.  These webinars are free to the public and will be taking place over the next three weeks with the first webinar on October 25th.  These webinars will be conducted over Zoom, last about 45 minutes, and time will be given for each webinar for attendees to ask questions and take part in discussions.

If you are an educator thinking about getting Esports started at your school, or just starting out, join these webinars to hear from current Esports coaches and coordinators, as well as those who can help you get the tech off the ground.
